_ "Boogie-Woogie and The Blues" by Andrew D. Gordon
This 64 page book is dedicated to all the great Blues and Boogie-Woogie pianists who Andrew has had the privilege of listening to over the last 40 years. His first recollection of being inspired to learn Blues piano was in 1968 when he heard the Blues piano solo by Nicky Hopkins on the song “Blues Deluxe” from Jeff Beck’s first album “Truth” Just as that piano solo inspired him, in turn he hopes these songs inspire you in the same way. The song “Boogie with Nicky” is dedicated to Nicky Hopkins. He hopes that you have the same enjoyment learning and playing these songs as he did creating them.
There are nine songs in this book which Andrew composed ranging from the slow Blues of L.S. Blues to the up-tempo Boogie-Woogie of Holly and Ben’s Boogie as well as the Ragtime feel of Raggedy Blues. Beside learning from this book it is important to listen to the masters of Blues and Boogie-Woogie piano styles, a discography on page 2 will get you started.
As of December 2018 the book has been updated to include downloadable audio files which include the piano with rhythm tracks and rhythm play-a-long tracks to practice along with.
Anyone who has previously bought the book with the piano part only and would like the rhythm audio files please contact [email protected]
Review of the CD by Bmanh
I recently received a cd of piano boogie and blues by Andrew D. Gordon called Boogie-Woogie and the Blues. This is a straight up piano cd with 9 original tracks. The cd opens with the title track and is a stark contrast to the overproduced recordings that I sometimes receive. Just a man and his piano. Raggedy Blues is an uptempo take blend of Boogie and Ragtime. It's actually a pretty interesting take on the fusion of the two. Boogie In the Sunshine is a straight ahead boogie and one that you will likely find enjoyable if you like boogie piano. I like the piano syncopation that Andrew gets going in the track. Boogie With Nicky is moves along pretty quickly and may be a nod to Gordon's appreciation for piano great Nicky Hopkins. Come On You Blues ventures on the boogie train in to a jazz genre. I like the change and it is quite sophisticated. Holly and Ben's Boogie is a cool 12 bar blues with piano improvisation. H.R. Blues is a slow grinding blues and possibly my favorite. Junk Mail Blues takes on the New Orleans feel and delivers the gumbo. Korean Barbecue Blues has that old style boogie feel and is a good conclusion to the cd.
If you like acapella piano and you like boogie-woogie...this may be your ticket!

With this album, piano player and teacher Andrew D. Gordon aims to do his particular tribute to the great names of blues and boogie-woogie like Pete Johnson, Albert Ammons, Meade Lux Lewis or Jimmy Yancey, in whose work he has always found his inspiration. For more than forty years he has been listening this kind of music and now he has written nine songs to be included in the cd. His passion for blues comes from 1968, when Andrew first heard Nicky Hopkins playing "Blues DeLuxe", along with Jeff Beck on guitar and Rod Stewart on vocals. Andrew D. Gordon was born in England and in 1979 he moved to California to follow his musical career. He teaches piano at the Shepherd University School Of Music in Los Angeles and he also gives Internet online lessons through Skype and a webcam. Enjoy blues and boogie-woogie along these nine songs this great master has recorded for you in this intimist album. VERY GOOD.

Congratulations and Bravissimo! I LOVE this new Boogie Woogie and The Blues CD! Lucky me that you took the time and effort to transcribe this muisc. It is SO REFRESHING! You have so imaginatively integrated traditional blues sounds in a new and innovative way. I myself have been in what I call a "riff rut". Studying this book is going to open my mind immensely. I am really excited about practicing these tunes. THANK YOU so much for producing this and being willing to share it with others. I love the discography at the end of the book. I will pursue obtaining these CD's as well.
All the greats that you cite would be so proud of your accomplishment. Rock on! D.F. Florida
